Doncaster Rovers Injury Blow: Striker Ruled Out For Season

Doncaster Rovers forward Tavonga Kuleya has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a hamstring injury while on loan at Belper Town.

The 20-year-old will undergo surgery, with manager Grant McCann confirming he faces up to eight weeks on the sidelines.

Setback for Kuleya After Encouraging Loan Spell

Kuleya, who has been with Doncaster since the age of 14, had been impressing at Belper after a series of previous loan moves where he struggled to find consistency. However, his progress has now been halted by an injury that requires an operation.

“Yeah, unfortunately, he picked up a hamstring injury. It’s a shame because Tav has been doing really well there,” McCann told the Doncaster Free Press. “They’ve (Belper) been really pleased with him. He’s had quite a few loans now, and he’s not really settled too well at any of them. But they were pleased with him at Belper and he was doing well. I think he’ll have an operation on Thursday on his hamstring.”

With his contract set to expire in the summer, Kuleya’s injury comes at a difficult time as he looks to secure his future. Having made 13 senior appearances for Rovers, his last outing for the club came on New Year’s Day in 2024.

Doncaster’s Injury Situation Improving

While Kuleya’s setback is unfortunate, Doncaster’s overall injury situation is far more positive compared to last season, when the squad was severely depleted. Head of medical Dave Rennie has overseen a significant reduction in injuries since his arrival in late 2023, with muscle problems and long-term concerns becoming far less frequent.

Skipper Richard Wood recently returned to action, and ahead of their weekend fixture against Newport County, McCann confirmed that he has a fully fit squad to choose from—aside from the suspended duo Jack Senior and Patrick Kelly.

Looking Ahead

For Kuleya, the focus will now be on his recovery and determining his next steps, whether that be a return to Doncaster Rovers or a fresh challenge elsewhere. With McCann speaking highly of the young striker’s recent progress, his rehabilitation will be crucial in shaping his long-term prospects.

Writer’s View

This is an untimely setback for Kuleya, who was beginning to find his footing at Belper after struggling to settle in previous loan spells. With his contract expiring, he now faces a crucial period to prove his fitness and potential. Meanwhile, Doncaster’s improved injury record underlines the impact of their medical department, offering a more stable platform for McCann’s squad as they push for a strong finish to the season.
