Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris admits that the League Two relegation battle is uncomfortably close despite his side maintaining a nine-point gap from the drop zone.
Holding Their Ground
The Gills secured a goalless draw against bottom-placed Carlisle United over the weekend, a result that extended their cushion above the relegation spots. While they hold a couple of games in hand over second-from-bottom Morecambe, Morris insists there’s no room for complacency.
“I think now everyone’s stepping up to the plate on that pitch and putting an effort in. We’re obviously disappointed not to have won the game, but it’s a tricky place to go. I’ve been in football a long time, and I don’t think I’ve won many games there, so it’s a good solid point. It keeps us a bit further away from the danger zone.”
The veteran shot-stopper emphasised the importance of continuing to pick up points to ensure their survival.
“We don’t want to get closer and closer [to the drop]. We want to get our work done early with these games left to go and make sure we’re pulling away and looking up rather than down. That’s what we want to do and that’s the main aim.”

Fans’ Unwavering Support
Morris also praised the 400 travelling fans who made the long journey north to support the team, crediting their backing as a vital boost.
“It’s amazing. It’s a long old way, and we give them great credit because they did help. You could hear them pushing us on, and it’s brilliant—that’s what we need. Great commitment, and we can’t thank them enough.”
Upcoming Crucial Fixtures
Gillingham are currently on a 12-game winless streak and have an opportunity to further distance themselves from the bottom two as they prepare to face Fleetwood Town on Tuesday, followed by a crucial clash with Morecambe.
“We want to get the win as soon as possible and we feel like we’ve come close so many times and just not got over that line. But if we keep putting in that performance, it will turn.”
Writer’s View
Gillingham’s battle to avoid relegation is far from over, but their defensive resilience and ability to grind out results have provided hope. While Morris’ experience is proving crucial, turning draws into wins is now the priority. Their next few games, particularly against Morecambe, could define their survival hopes.
