MK Dons boss Scott Lindsey has highlighted his team’s lack of defensive options after yet another reshuffle at the back in their 2-0 defeat to Bradford City.
Injuries to key players have left the Dons struggling to maintain consistency in defence, with the head coach forced to deploy his ninth different defensive setup in just five months.
Injury Woes Leave Dons Short at the Back
Saturday’s loss at Valley Parade saw Lindsey return to a back three, recalling Charlie Waller for only his second league start. The 20-year-old partnered Southampton loanee Nico Lawrence and Luke Offord, who has only recently returned from a month-long injury layoff.
Despite the experience of Dean Lewington and Sam Sherring in the squad, Lindsey insists his hands are tied due to ongoing fitness concerns.
“We’re asking really young players to play against real experience,” Lindsey said. “We’ve not got other defenders available. Nathan Thompson, Laurence Maguire, Jack Sanders are all out, three proper experienced players.
The head coach admitted that the defensive rotation has taken a toll on the team’s performances, as inexperienced players are being thrust into key roles.

Search for Stability Continues
With just a few months left in the season, the defensive struggles pose a serious challenge to MK Dons’ hopes of climbing the League Two table. Lindsey stressed that getting players back to full fitness is now a top priority.
“Charlie Waller was only making his second start, Nico Lawrence is being asked to play every game, Luke Offord has been out for a while and has had to play 90 minutes. We’re threadbare at the back at the moment,” Lindsey admitted. “We’ve got to get some of the players back fit to help them out.”
The Dons will be hoping for a swift recovery for their sidelined defenders as they prepare for a crucial run of fixtures.
Writer’s View
MK Dons’ defensive instability has been a recurring issue throughout the season, and Lindsey’s comments underline the scale of the problem. While young players like Lawrence and Waller show promise, the lack of experience is proving costly. With key absentees still on the mend, the Dons must find a way to shore up their defence quickly or risk further setbacks in their League Two campaign.
