Birmingham City forward Jay Stansfield was taken to hospital for assessments following a concerning knee injury sustained during the Blues’ 2-1 victory over Bradford City in the Vertu Trophy semi-final on Tuesday night.
While Birmingham celebrated securing a spot at Wembley for the first time since 2011, the win came at a cost. Stansfield, who opened the scoring with a brilliant first-half volley, suffered a serious injury in the second half following a mistimed challenge from Bradford defender Romoney Crichlow.
Injury Mars Birmingham’s Trip to Wembley
The 20-year-old fell awkwardly on his knee and immediately cried out in pain. Medical staff provided extensive treatment on the pitch, taking seven to eight minutes to ensure no further damage occurred. Stansfield was stretchered off with an oxygen mask and transported to a local hospital for scans and tests.

Manager Chris Davies Expresses Concern
Birmingham manager Chris Davies, speaking post-match, highlighted the severity of the injury.
“It was above his knee, it was a bad fall. He (Crichlow) has landed on him basically. I don’t know the extent of it but he was in a lot of pain and has gone to hospital for checks,” Davies said.
“It’s the severity of the impact they’re concerned about as the guy’s landed on the bone. He was in a lot of pain. To get stretchered off like that is obviously a huge concern.”
Potential Impact on Birmingham’s Promotion Push
Birmingham City are awaiting results to determine whether Stansfield has suffered ligament damage or a potential fracture to either the fibula or tibia. The £10 million signing has been a key player for the Blues this season, scoring 20 goals and providing two assists in 29 appearances.
With 17 games left in the League One season, Birmingham are well-placed for promotion, but losing Stansfield for an extended period could significantly affect their title aspirations. The striker’s form has been instrumental in keeping the club in contention for both silverware and a return to the Championship.
Controversial Officiating Adds to Drama
The match was not without controversy. Shortly after Stansfield’s injury, referee Scott Oldham denied Birmingham a clear penalty, allowing Bradford to equalise through a contentious goal. Fortunately for the Blues, Lyndon Dykes scored an 88th-minute header to secure the win and a place in the final.
Writer’s View
Birmingham City’s promotion hopes could hinge on the severity of Jay Stansfield’s injury. His performances have been a cornerstone of their campaign, and a lengthy absence would be a massive blow. While the win over Bradford keeps the dream of silverware alive, all eyes are now on Stansfield’s recovery. The Blues will need their talisman fit and firing if they are to secure a successful end to the season.
