‘Hugely Important’ – Wrexham Star On Squad Motivation

Ollie Rathbone continued his impressive form for Wrexham as he found the net in a crucial 2-0 victory against Northampton Town.

The midfielder’s improvement since joining from Rotherham United has been remarkable, and his latest goal only further highlights his growing influence. Goals from January signing Sam Smith and Rathbone sealed a comfortable win over Northampton, keeping Wrexham firmly in the hunt for promotion.

The victory closed the gap to Wycombe Wanderers to just two points, with Phil Parkinson’s side maintaining momentum as the season reaches its decisive stages.

Rathbone’s Key Improvement at Wrexham

Since his arrival in January, Smith has received praise from Parkinson for opening his Wrexham account, but Rathbone’s contributions have been equally significant. The 28-year-old’s goal at Northampton was his fourth of the season, underlining the attacking threat he has developed.

During his time at Rotherham, Rathbone managed just eight goals in 138 appearances, never exceeding four league goals in a single campaign. Yet, he has already matched that tally for Wrexham, with three months of the season still to go.

His ability to drive into the box and finish chances has set him apart, and James McClean has publicly lauded Rathbone’s performances, expressing disbelief that Wrexham were able to secure his services.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Rathbone admitted that increasing his goal output has been a key focus since joining Wrexham.

“It was something I really wanted to add to my game,” said Rathbone. “It’s something I’ve wanted to improve because I knew I had it in me. I’ve probably just put more emphasis on it and I’ve really tried working on it in training so my confidence is up.

“I think the competition for places makes it hugely important – all the other midfielders are chipping in with goals so it’s important I keep doing that.

“I’m really glad to be contributing goals and assists and helping the team ultimately.”

Rathbone’s Role Becomes Even More Crucial

Rathbone’s recent form is especially timely for Wrexham, given that Elliot Lee is currently sidelined after an accident. With Lee’s return date uncertain, Rathbone is likely to shoulder more attacking responsibility.

Among Wrexham’s other midfielders, George Dobson has only scored eight league goals in his entire career, while Matty James has never exceeded three in a single season. That leaves Rathbone as the club’s main source of goals from midfield.

With Wrexham pushing for promotion, Rathbone’s growing influence could make the difference as the season reaches its climax.

Writer’s View

Rathbone’s move to Wrexham appeared to be a solid addition at the time, but few could have predicted just how impactful he would be. His transformation into a genuine goal threat has added a new dimension to Wrexham’s midfield. With Lee absent, Parkinson will be relying on Rathbone more than ever, and if his current trajectory continues, he could be one of the standout players of Wrexham’s season.
