Plymouth Argyle head coach Miron Muslic says his side’s clash with Luton Town will be ‘bigger than Liverpool’ as the Pilgrims look to continue their fight against relegation.
The Devon-based side saw a four-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to a halt at the weekend when they lost 2-0 against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. Their recent form had given them belief that they can pull off an unlikely survival bid, with a stunning 5-1 win over Millwall last week seeing them move off the foot of the table.
Plymouth had made the headlines earlier this month when they beat Premier League leaders Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round. They had already beaten top tier opposition in the previous round when they secured a 1-0 victory over Brentford in January.
With a clash against English champions Manchester City in the pipeline, they will take a break from their FA Cup exploits tomorrow night when they take on fellow relegation-threatened Luton Town. Defeat will mean they return to the bottom of the league, whilst three points could see them move out of the bottom three for the first time since November.
“It Is Big” – Muslic Keen To Bounce Back
With so much potentially riding on the trip to Kenilworth Road, Muslic is determined for his team to show the same determination that saw them overcome the might of Liverpool. Speaking to official club media, he said:
“It is big (Wednesday night), no doubt. The pressure is there, but that is just part of our journey, and we must deal with that. In the last three or four weeks, we’ve shown the character to face this and if you purely look at the standings in the table, you know it’s a big one.
“It’s bigger than Liverpool in terms of the importance of the game. We know this. We will have good structure, good organisation and a cool mindset. If we manage to do this, we will have opportunities to be successful.”
Writer’s View
Muslic’s arrival in January has sparked a real belief around Plymouth that they can pull off the almost unthinkable. They are a team that had been shipping goals at a rate of knots before the beginning of this month, but the defeat against Blackburn has somewhat brought them back to reality. There is little doubt that the clash with Luton is their biggest of the season so far. Nobody gave them a chance against Liverpool but if they want to maintain their stay in the Championship, a minimum of a point has to be the aim in Bedfordshire.
