Bolton Wanderers Boss Steven Schumacher Reflects on Wrexham

While the idea of having documentary cameras follow him around does not appeal to Steven Schumacher, the Bolton Wanderers manager acknowledges that there are always eyes on his every move.

Tonight, his side faces Wrexham in the quarter-final of the Vertu Trophy, a club that has become synonymous with the Hollywood-backed story of its rise through the leagues. Backed by celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham’s progress has often been attributed to their financial boost, but Schumacher is keen to highlight the work done by his predecessor, Phil Parkinson, in transforming the club.

“I’m not sure I’d like the cameras 24/7 here, I’m a bit more private than that, but it is a great story what has happened to them, knowing the hard times that they had over the years.

“I remember playing against Wrexham myself in League One, and the journey that they’ve been on has been interesting, dropping out of the league for so long, then getting the investment and generating the excitement to be where they are now. It’s a really good story.”

Parkinson’s Bolton Legacy Still Recognised

Parkinson, who previously managed Bolton, is well-regarded at the club for guiding them to automatic promotion in the 2016/17 season and pulling off a dramatic last-day survival in the Championship before financial difficulties engulfed the club.

Schumacher spoke highly of his counterpart, appreciating the work Parkinson has done despite the extra attention Wrexham receives.

“Phil is top drawer, he really is. He is somebody who I get on really well with, he’s got time for the young coaches and has got loads of experience.

“He has done really well over the years wherever he has been, and at Wrexham, he has done a great job under what I’m sure sometimes are difficult circumstances because of all that attention.

Bolton’s Push for Promotion

Bolton heads into the tie against Wrexham following a thrilling 4-3 victory over Crawley, a result that brought them level with the League One play-off places. With a crucial match against Shrewsbury Town on the horizon, Schumacher is mindful of balancing his squad’s fitness and priorities.

However, he insists that expectations at Bolton remain high, regardless of the competition.

“And so it shouldn’t. This club is too big for it not to have expectation and for people from the outside to be looking in and wanting more, that’s what this club’s all about and I embrace that.”

Writer’s View

Steven Schumacher’s remarks show a deep understanding of the pressures and ambitions that come with managing a club like Bolton Wanderers. His admiration for Phil Parkinson’s work at Wrexham is a refreshing acknowledgment of the dedication required beyond the Hollywood spotlight.
