Newport County Boss Reveals Transfer Strategy

Newport County boss Nelson Jardim has hinted that the club may still bring in “one or two” more players before the January transfer window closes on Monday.

The Exiles have already made several additions this month, but Jardim remains open to further strengthening the squad.

Strengthening the Squad

Newport have secured the services of goalkeeper Lewis Webb, full-back Tom Davies, and forward Josh Martin, while also extending striker Kyle Hudlin’s loan from Huddersfield Town. Jardim believes these moves have already improved the squad compared to the first half of the season.

However, with Davies sustaining a muscle injury during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Salford City, the club may need to reassess their defensive options.

“We are quite happy with everything we’ve done. We’ve got different solutions for different positions,” Jardim told BBC Sport Wales. “Tom, we were not expecting to lose him now. He came to fill a position that we were actually waiting for three months to fill – that left-sided position.”

Remaining Active in the Market

Jardim emphasised that Newport are not under pressure to make additional signings, but the club remains open to the right opportunity if it presents itself.

“In terms of the other positions, we’re always assessing the market, but if we don’t feel it’s the right player or character to join this club, we’re not going to do it. If something is there for us, if it’s right for us then we will do it. We’re not forcing anything. But if we have the chance, we will do one or two.”

Huw Jenkins Heavily Involved in Transfers

Jardim also confirmed that Newport chairman Huw Jenkins is overseeing transfer activity and will make the final call on any potential arrivals before the deadline.

“In terms of signings, he’s going to make the final calls, but we are working together to make sure we are stronger. I think this transfer window shows that we are a stronger team than we were previously.”

Writer’s View

Newport County’s measured approach to the transfer window suggests they are prioritising long-term squad stability over last-minute panic buys. While injuries such as Davies’ setback may force a rethink, Jardim’s comments indicate the club will only bring in players who fit their tactical needs and dressing-room culture. With just days remaining, the next move could be crucial in shaping the Exiles’ push for a strong finish in League Two.
