Stockport County host Shrewsbury Town at Edgeley Park in a game between two teams with very different aspirations in League One.
Our Three Predictions For Stockport County vs Shrewsbury Town
- First Prediction: Stockport County To Win – 41/100
- Second Prediction: Both Teams To Score – 49/50
- Third Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals – 41/50
First Prediction For Stockport County vs Shrewsbury Town – Stockport County To Win – 41/100
Stockport initially struggled with life after Louie Barry, with the club’s top scorer returning to Aston Villa in January. The 21-year-old had been a revelation during the first half of the campaign, scoring 15 times in 23 League One appearances to help catapult the Hatters into the play-off positions. After three games without a win at the turn of the year, they have recovered to record back-to-back wins against Reading and Crawley Town to maintain their spot in fifth.
Shrewsbury hit the bottom of the table with an agonising late defeat against Charlton Athletic on Saturday. This followed an excellent win over promotion chasers Wrexham, but Gareth Ainsworth is still waiting for his first away win since taking over the managerial position in November.
Second Prediction For Stockport County vs Shrewsbury Town – Both Teams To Score – 49/50
Although Stockport kept a clean sheet in their 2-0 win over Crawley at the weekend, this was the first time they hadn’t conceded since the beginning of December, a run stretching seven games. They’ve also failed to score on only four occasions this season, showing their threat in the attacking third is up there with the best in the division. Three of the teams which did manage to shut them out are in the top four, which includes Birmingham City, Wycombe Wanderers and Huddersfield Town.
Despite their lowly position, goals haven’t been a huge problem for Shrewsbury. Although they have failed to score in two of their last three outings, a 1-0 defeat against Leyton Orient earlier this month was the first time they hadn’t hit the back of the net since losing 2-0 to Burton Albion on November 9th. On top of that, eight of their last 11 league games have seen both teams score.
Third Prediction For Stockport County vs Shrewsbury Town – Over 2.5 Goals – 41/50
With Shrewsbury looking good for a goal on paper, Stockport could need to score at least twice to secure the three points. Gareth Ainsworth has shown that he isn’t prepared to see his team lose their League One status without a fight, and he will no doubt instruct his players to have a go at their opposition. This could see the home side be given the space to operate in behind. On top of that, only Cambridge United and Peterborough United have conceded more than the Shrews.
It’s worth noting that the away side have been better defensively in recent weeks. They have not conceded more than once since drawing 2-2 with Wigan Athletic before Christmas, but Stockport know they have teams breathing down their neck in the race for the play-offs and really need three points here. The fate of the pair mean we could be in for an open game.

Full Preview of the Game: Last Results and Head-To-Head
Stockport recorded back-to-back wins on Saturday for the first time since November, with the pair of victories ending a barren run of four games where they picked up just two points. This saw them drop out of the play-off positions, but they have since moved back up to fifth with the likes of Barnsley and Reading both recording successive defeats.
Shrewsbury have shown glimpses that they are willing to put up a real fight to avoid relegation. They were unlucky to lose against Charlton on Saturday when Thierry Small struck in the 96th minute to secure a 1-0 victory for the Addicks. This game followed an excellent 2-1 win over Wrexham and despite losing 1-0 at Leyton Orient, they have only tasted defeat twice in their last seven games. However, with draws against Wigan, Northampton Town and Blackpool, they really need to start starting one point into three. They will enter this game bottom of the table and seven points from safety.
The two teams met at Croud Meadow in October, with Stockport leaving Shropshire with a 2-0 win. The Hatter also won their previous meeting, which came in the EFL Trophy in 2022. Shrewsbury haven’t beaten the Greater Manchester-based side since 2011, although there was an 11-year gap between meetings after Stockport dropped into non-league.
