Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Colchester United head into this clash with promotional chasing Port Vale on a run of two wins and two wins in their last five League Two matches.  Saturday saw The U’s overcome ten man Morecambe thanks to a 65th minute Mandela Egbo strike.

The victory against the now bottom club Morecambe was a third game unbeaten for Danny Cowley’s men, having drawn 0-0 away from home at Harrogate Town last Tuesday and claimed all three points at Bromley the previous Saturday thanks to Owura Edwards.

Prior to defeat at Swindon Town o New Year’s Day, Cowley’s side had enjoyed a nine game unbeaten run in the league beating sides like playoff chasers AFC Wimbledon and Grimsby Town.

The U’s sit 13th in League Two having collected 34 points from their 27 matches. They are something of a draw specialist, playing out 13 stalemates so far. Defensively they are right and have kept the joint most clean sheets in the league with 12.

Port Vale travel to Essex having tasted  defeat just once in their last five and on the back of a resolute point with ten men at Chesterfield on Saturday.

Darren Moore’s side beat Newport County the Saturday before and gained an impressive victory at Doncaster Rovers on January 4th.

Vale are currently 4th in the League Two table just a point behind Doncaster who occupy the final automatic promotion spot. Top scorer Jayden Stockley has scored six times this season and Swiss attacker Lorent Tolaj and weighed in with five assists.

These sides cannot be separated in terms of their recent head-to-head meetings, each winning six of the last 17 meetings since 2013. This season’s meeting between the sides ended in a 1-1 draw at Vale Park thanks to a last gasp Samson Tovide goal cancelled out Jesse Debrah’s opener for the hosts. The previous meetings between the sides came in League Two in 2022 when both sides won a fixture each. The first game saw Vale run out comprehensive 3-0 victors thanks to goals from James Gibbons, James Wilson and Aaron Martin. The reverse fixture saw a 1-0 win for Colchester United thanks to a header from Tom Dallison with just five minutes to go.

The last time the two sides met each other outside of League Two came in the 2015-16 season when the spoils were shared again. George Elokobi and Marvin Sordell gave Colchester the three points despite Colin Daniel equalising for Vale on the stroke of half time. Theo Robinson and Sam Foley were on the scoresheet March 2016 as Vale ran out the winners by two goals to nil in a season that eventually saw Colchester relegated out of the Football League.
