Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo demonstrated immense commitment to his team by playing through a broken wrist during a 1-0 victory over Mansfield Town.
The 23-year-old stopper sustained the injury in the 35th minute but managed to complete the game, securing a clean sheet that kept Phil Parkinson’s side on track in League One.
Playing Through the Pain
Okonkwo, who joined Wrexham permanently last summer from Arsenal, admitted he was in significant discomfort but chose to carry on without realising the extent of his injury. Reflecting on the game, Okonkwo shared:
“I was in a lot of pain to be fair. I broke my wrist in the first half and I played on not knowing. I got through with it and still kept a clean sheet! You wouldn’t think I’d broke my wrist but I never want to come off.”
Despite the severity of the injury, Okonkwo expressed gratitude towards the club’s medical staff for their swift intervention, which allowed him to recover and return to action within two months. He made his comeback in a 1-0 victory over Peterborough United and was back between the posts for last night’s derby clash against Shrewsbury Town.

Goalkeeping Depth Tested
While Okonkwo was sidelined, deputy goalkeeper Callum Burton stepped up impressively. However, Burton’s run was cut short due to a torn thigh sustained in a 1-0 win against Barnsley, forcing veteran Mark Howard to fill the gap.
Okonkwo expressed sympathy for Burton, who had waited patiently for his opportunity:
“I was really sad for Callum because he was doing well after I got injured. Us as goalkeepers, we know how hard it is and when you get your opportunity, you want to take it and he did. Then out of nowhere, he got injured and it is so deflating.”
Back to Business
With nine clean sheets to his name this season, Okonkwo is determined to continue his fine form and help Wrexham push for success. His return adds stability to the squad as the team navigates a challenging League One campaign.
