Sheffield United Learn Asking Price For Key Transfer Target

Sheffield United will have to pay £7 million to land Leicester City striker Tom Cannon this month, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The 22-year-old is currently on a season-long loan with the Blades’ Championship rivals Stoke City, where he is the Potters top scorer with 11 goals in all competitions. This has attracted the interest of Chris Wilder, whilst Sunderland have also been linked.

Leicester have until later tonight to recall Cannon from the bet365 Stadium. Should this deadline fail to be met, he will remain at Stoke for the remainder of the campaign.

Mark Robins appears as if he is ready to lose his talisman before the end of the week. The new head coach made the decision to recall a loanee of their own yesterday when Nathan Lowe returned from League Two leaders Walsall. The 19-year-old has been in electric for the Saddlers, scoring 15 times in 22 league outings.

Leicester Set Asking Price For Cannon

With the deadline to cancel Cannon’s deal at Stoke fast approaching, Leicester have named their price for any potential suitor. According to Nixon, that fee stands at £7 million.

The journalist also claims that Sheffield United’s owners are willing to back Chris Wilder and sign the Republic of Ireland international in order to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking. It is noted though that the former Preston North End loanee is settled at Stoke and would be willing to remain in Staffordshire for the remainder of the season.

Foxes boss Ruud van Nistelrooy addressed the situation earlier this week, saying:

“He’s (Cannon) one on the list for us. We keep a close eye on him. Tom’s situation is closely assessed. There are decisions to be made on that. It’s still a possibility (he stays at Stoke). But we’re looking at what is best for his situation and what is best for the club.”

Writer’s View

We will know by the end of tonight as to whether this deal could happen. If Leicester fail to exercise the recall option by midnight, he will remain with Stoke. However, if he is brought back to the King Power Stadium, it is expected that it will be for a permanent move. Obviously, that deal doesn’t need to happen today and can take place at any point before the end of the transfer window. This all depends on the interest from Sheffield United and perhaps Sunderland. If neither make their interest concrete today, Leicester will likely leave him where he is.
