Former Lincoln City Midfielder Makes National League Return

Experienced midfielder Alex Woodyard has made a return to the National League, signing with Sutton United following his departure from Colchester United.

The 30-year-old, known for his promotion-winning spell at Lincoln City, is set to bring stability and quality to a Sutton side aiming to rediscover their form.

A Journey Through the Football Pyramid

Woodyard’s career has seen him make significant contributions at various levels of English football. He played a key role in Lincoln City’s rise through the Football League under manager Danny Cowley, who he later reunited with at Colchester United. His career also includes stints at Peterborough United, AFC Wimbledon, Southend United, and York City.

Last season, Woodyard featured in 30 matches for York City, but his time at the club ended after he fell out of favour under current manager Adam Hinshelwood. His tenure at Colchester was cut short following a knee injury, and with game time expected to be limited, Woodyard opted for a fresh start at Sutton.

Strengthening Sutton’s Midfield

Sutton United are currently mid-table in the National League, sitting 13th after a challenging run of seven matches without a win. Manager Steve Morrison will hope that Woodyard’s experience and leadership can help the team regain the form they showed in November, when they recorded four consecutive wins and clean sheets.

“I know what it takes in this league, I know what it’s about. I’ve been at both ends of it, I’ve won it and have also struggled with York last year,” Woodyard said in an interview with Sutton United’s media team. “Game time at Colchester could be limited towards the end of the season, so for me and my career, I want to play as many games as possible.”

A Familiar Challenge Ahead

Woodyard’s familiarity with the National League could be crucial for Sutton. With the club needing a steadying presence in midfield, his knowledge of the league’s demands and his track record of success offer hope for a turnaround in form. Sutton’s next challenge is a trip to Woodyard’s former club York City on January 18, adding an intriguing subplot to his debut period with the U’s.

Alex Woodyard’s signing represents a smart move for Sutton United. His experience, both in achieving promotion and navigating difficult campaigns, could prove vital as the club seeks to climb the table. While Sutton’s recent struggles are a concern, Woodyard’s arrival signals their intent to stabilise and compete in the second half of the season.
