Barrow head coach Stephen Clemence insists work is being done to add more players to his squad before the end of the transfer window.
The 46-year-old was named as Pete Wild’s successor last May with the task of improving on last season’s eighth-placed finish. Wild was a huge hit at Holker Street but departed after the club missed out on a place in the League Two play-offs on the final day of the season.
It appeared as if the transition would be a smooth one in the early stages of the campaign. With five wins in their opening seven games, the Bluebirds topped the table. However, they have won just twice since to slip down to 15th.
Clemence Keen For More January Business
With the transfer window reopening last week, Clemence was quick to act, bringing in Isaac Fletcher from Spennymoor Town and Kyle Cameron on loan from league rivals Notts County. The former Gillingham boss insists their business isn’t finished there though, revealing to BBC Radio Cumbria:
“We are still trying to get players into the building.
“There’s a long way left in the window, and we are still trying to do work.”
Barrow’s latest signings both made their debuts in the 2-0 defeat to Harrogate Town on Saturday, with Clemence revealing he was delighted with their early contributions to the team:
“I was really pleased to get two boys over the line very, very quickly.
“We needed to do that. I thought Isaac was absolutely fantastic when he came on. That was the big positive for me.
“You saw a lad come on that took the ball in tight areas. He found his passes, he wanted to get in the box and he was one of the ones where I said ‘Well done to you’ after the game.”
Writer’s View
After such a promising start to the season, the last few months have been miserable for Barrow and Stephen Clemence. The head coach would have been hoping he could go one step further than his predecessor and earn a place in the top seven, but it now looks as if this could be a season of consolidation. They are now 12 points off the play-off places, although Clemence is clearly keen to tweak his squad in order to finish as high as possible.
