Burnley forward Michael Mellon has caught the attention of Chesterfield, with the EFL side reportedly interested in securing his services during the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old, currently on loan at Stockport County in League One, is set to return to Turf Moor this winter, giving Burnley a decision to make about his next move.
Struggles at Stockport County
Mellon joined Stockport County on loan in the summer after their promotion to League One. However, the forward has struggled for regular game time and has found it difficult to make an impact at Edgeley Park. With his development at a critical stage, a move to a team where he can secure more minutes on the pitch is seen as essential for his progress.
Chesterfield’s Interest
Journalist Alan Nixon has reported that Chesterfield, currently 9th in League Two, are keen to bring Mellon to the Technique Stadium. Managed by former Wigan Athletic and Portsmouth boss Paul Cook, Chesterfield are just two points outside the play-off places and view Mellon as a potential boost to their attacking options.
Chesterfield isn’t the only club monitoring Mellon’s situation. Walsall, Northampton Town, and Fleetwood Town have also been linked with the forward. Burnley will need to weigh their options carefully to ensure Mellon’s next move maximises his opportunities for development.
A Promising Career Yet to Take Off
Mellon began his football journey in Manchester United’s academy, where he was a regular feature in youth teams. In 2019, he joined Burnley but is yet to make a senior appearance for the Clarets. Over the years, he has been loaned out to Morecambe and Dundee to gain experience, and his current spell at Stockport was intended to further his growth. However, the lack of game time has stalled his progress.
The Scotland youth international has football in his blood, as his father, Micky Mellon, is a seasoned manager currently in charge of Oldham Athletic. Despite his potential, Michael Mellon’s career trajectory now depends on finding the right team to give him consistent playing time.
What’s Next?
Burnley are expected to decide Mellon’s next destination in January. Chesterfield, newly promoted from the National League, are eager to strengthen their squad as they push for a play-off spot. A move to Chesterfield could provide Mellon with the regular minutes he needs to prove himself at the senior level while helping Paul Cook’s side in their bid for promotion.
With interest also coming from clubs like Walsall and Northampton Town, Mellon’s future will likely be determined in the early stages of the transfer window. For now, Burnley must evaluate their options to ensure their young forward’s potential is realised.
