Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley has revealed that the club will be looking to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.
With Simon Bassey leading the recruitment efforts, the U’s are focusing on loan signings to boost their performance in the second half of the season.
Loan Signings a Priority
Colchester currently have three loan players, including Nottingham Forest duo Aaron Donnelly and Jamie McDonnell, who have been impressive in recent weeks. Anthony Scully, on loan from Portsmouth, is also part of the squad but is sidelined with an ankle injury. He’s likely to return to Portsmouth ‘properly’ as he faces surgery, leaving a potential three spaces.
Reflecting on their strategy, Cowley stated:
“Probably for us, we’re looking at loans. We have three loans at the moment and we have some scope in that area. We have to make sure that we get it right as a football club. It’s for us to say what’s affordable and what’s good value within that affordability.”
The U’s made effective use of loan deals last January, bringing in players such as Harry Anderson, Alistair Smith, Riley Harbottle, and Jayden Richardson. Cowley emphasised the importance of collaboration in the recruitment process to ensure value and suitability.
Timing of New Additions
While Colchester are keen to bring in reinforcements, Cowley admitted that it is unlikely for any signings to arrive in the early days of the window. The busy schedule over the festive period, which includes matches against Gillingham, Doncaster Rovers, and Swindon Town, leaves little room for immediate deals.
Cowley explained:
“Not much happens in that early part of January, because the games are so quick. Realistically, nothing’s going to happen before the Accrington Stanley game on January 4th, I would say.”
Looking Ahead
Colchester United are eager to climb the League Two standings and see the January transfer window as an opportunity to bolster their squad. With the focus on securing impactful loan signings, the U’s aim to build on their recent performances and strengthen their push for a strong finish to the season.
Writer’s View
Danny Cowley’s cautious yet pragmatic approach to the January transfer window demonstrates an understanding of Colchester’s financial realities and squad needs. By targeting loans, the U’s can reinforce their team without overextending resources. However, much will depend on the timing and quality of these acquisitions. With key matches during the busy festive period, the challenge will be maintaining form until reinforcements arrive.
