Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Middlesbrough welcome Sheffield Wednesday to the Riverside Stadium on the back of what fans will see as a disappointing 3-3 draw at bottom side Plymouth Argyle.
Michael Carrick’s side had to come from behind three times to take a point home from Devon, with Emmanuel Latte Lath grabbing the third with six minutes to go.
Boro have been in indifferent form of late, winning, drawing and losing two games in their last six outings. The Teesiders still occupy the final playoff spot in the Championship but are being chased down by Watford, West Bromwich Albion and their Bog Day opponents.
Sheffield Wednesday travel to Middlesbrough on Boxing Day on the back of a 2-0 victory over Stoke City on Saturday after playing the entire second half with ten men.
The Owls were reduced to ten just before half time when Di’Shon Bernard was shown a second yellow card. However, it was the men from Hillsborough who made the break though minutes into the second half through Josh Windass before a 76th minute strike from Callum Paterson secured the win.
That was the second win on the bounce for Wednesday and their fourth from their previous six matches, only tasting defeat once during that time.
Danny Rohl’s side have only lost twice in nine games as he looks to propel the club into a playoff challenge. A win against Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough could be huge in Wednesday’s hunt for a top six finish.
The previous 15 meetings have seen Middlesbrough come out in top eights times to Sheffield Wednesday’s five victories.
Last season saw Michael Carrick’s side come away with four points from the two Championship meetings between the sides. The Boro left Sheffield with a point thanks to a Darragh Lenihan equaliser after Anthony Musaba had given the shots a 38th minute lead.
The return fixture at the Riverside Stadium saw a Lewis O’Brien inspired Middlesbrough claim a 2-0 win as they looked to snatch a playoff place. A Michael Ihiekwe own goal gave the hosts the lead before Isaiah Jones secured the three points.
Wednesday last took all three points in December 2020 in a clash at Hillsborough. The Owls raced into a 2-0 lead at the break thanks to Calum Paterson and Liam Shaw. Boro, then managed by Neil Warnock, pulled one back through Duncan Watmore just after half time but were unable to find the equaliser.
