Sunderland have set an asking price of between £20-25 million for midfielder Chris Rigg amid continued interest from Manchester United, according to Spanish media.
The Black Cats have been in imperious form this season, surprising many with their unlikely promotion pursuit. After enduring a miserable campaign last season, they have been transformed under the stewardship of Regis Le Bris. Saturday’s 3-2 win over Swansea City kept them fourth in the Championship, five points behind leaders Sheffield United.
One of the key stars for the Wearsiders has been Chris Rigg. The 17-year-old has long been touted as the latest crown jewel to emerge from the Sunderland academy, and he ended months of speculation in the summer by penning a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light.
He has since emerged as a regular starter under Le Bris, starting 19 of their 21 league outings. The teenager grabbed his first assist of the season against Swansea, whilst he has also scored three times.
Manchester United Interest Resurfaces
Manchester United have been long-term admirers of the youngster. According to Fichajes, this interest remains despite the recent departure of manager Erik ten Hag and the appointment of Ruben Amorim.
The 20-time English champions are entering another rebuilding era and are currently sitting in a lowly 13th in the Premier League. Amorim is expected to offload a number of big-money stars, which could include the likes of Marcus Rashford and Casemiro.
A change of tactics means that recruitment will be necessary, with Rigg seen as someone who can become a regular at Old Trafford for years to come. Sunderland will not be shortchanged though, and will demand between £20-25 million for his signature.
Sunderland Stance Softens?
Reports emerged in October claiming that Sunderland will refuse to entertain offers for the starlet once the transfer window reopens in January. With the club targeting a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2017, keeping hold of key players such as Rigg and Jobe Bellingham are imperative. However, every player has their price.
Writer’s View
With Rigg’s big reputation, it is inevitable that the so-called big guns will come calling at some point. Whilst Manchester United are known admirers, other clubs such as Chelsea, Liverpool and Real Madrid have also been linked in the past. The Red Devils’ interest is the one story that refuses to go away though. However, with their current financial issues, a January move would be unlikely. This is one that could pick up more traction next summer.
