Carlisle United Boss Reveals Tactic To Deal With Will Grigg

Carlisle United manager Mike Williamson has revealed what tactic he will instruct his team to deploy to deal with the threat of veteran striker Will Grigg against Chesterfield.

The Cumbrians play their first game of the month against the Spireites this afternoon having seen their fixture against Newport County postponed last weekend. They will enter the fixture on a run of four league games without a defeat, although they do still remain bottom of League Two.

Williamson will be targeting three points against a team hoping to break into the play-off positions. Chesterfield head into the tie having lost three of their last five, including their last two on the road.

Williamson Identifies Biggest Threat

Mike Williamson took over from Paul Simpson in September, tasked with the job of helping Carlisle avoid back-to-back relegations. Although their four-game unbeaten run only includes one win, it still represents a huge upturn in form.

The Blues know that they are in for a tough afternoon though. They will come up against veteran striker Will Grigg, who has seven goals in 18 league appearances this season. As such, the former MK Dons boss has revealed the instructions he will issue to his defence. Speaking to the News & Starhe said:

“He [Grigg] has had some career and he has a lot of quality. So for us, we’re going to be aggressive. We’re going to make sure that our back line are high.

“But players like that, their mind is their asset and if you give them half a yard they’ll punish you.

“So that’s why we’ve got to make sure that our contact in the box is spot on, our organisation [is good] and we make sure we defend in numbers.”

Carlisle are in real danger of dropping into the National League and know they need to continue their recent upturn in results. They are now just two points from safety and a win could see them move out of the bottom two. Will Grigg has enjoyed a career revitalisation since joining Chesterfield in 2023, helping the Derbyshire-based side win the National League title last season. Although he hasn’t scored since October, he is still a major threat. If Carlisle can keep him quiet, they stand a real chance of getting something out of the game.
