‘So Far Away’ – Gillingham Boss Slams Team After Yet Another Defeat

Bromley recorded their fourth League Two win of the season with a 2-1 triumph over Gillingham, thanks to Jude Arthurs’ decisive second-half goal.

The defeat deepens Gillingham’s recent struggles, leaving manager Mark Bonner frustrated with another underwhelming performance.

How the Game Unfolded

The match started with Bromley showing early intent as Gillingham goalkeeper Jake Turner turned behind Michael Cheek’s angled drive. Despite the hosts’ bright start, Gillingham grew into the game, and Elliott Nevitt came close to scoring for the visitors, only to be denied by Omar Sowunmi’s last-ditch challenge.

Both teams had chances to break the deadlock in the first half. Carl Jenkinson came closest for Bromley, latching onto Corey Whitely’s pass before being thwarted by Turner’s point-blank save. At the other end, Gillingham’s Jayden Clarke forced Grant Smith into action with an acrobatic effort early in the second half.

The game sprang into life nine minutes into the second half when Swansea loanee Cameron Congreve pounced on a loose ball in the box to give Bromley the lead. However, Gillingham responded immediately as Robbie McKenzie drilled a low shot beyond Smith after the hosts failed to clear their lines.

Bromley sealed the win in the 70th minute when Arthurs smashed a half-volley through a crowded penalty area to secure all three points for the home side.

Bonner’s Frustration

Speaking after the match, Gillingham manager Mark Bonner expressed his disappointment with his team’s inability to improve, despite efforts to address their issues during the international break.

“I’m probably sick of seeing and saying the same things really. It’s just so far away from the team we should be, or people think we can be or are in so many areas,” Bonner said.

The Gills managed only two shots on target during the match. Bonner highlighted a lack of tempo and risk in their play, noting that their first conceded goal came from an avoidable mistake. Despite equalising through McKenzie, Gillingham failed to build on that momentum.

Following back-to-back defeats against lower-ranked opponents, Gillingham’s promotion ambitions have taken a hit. Bonner’s side must regroup quickly to find consistency and avoid further setbacks in their League Two campaign.

Writer’s View

Gillingham’s defeat to Bromley highlights a team lacking confidence and cohesion. Despite brief flashes of quality, the Gills are falling short in critical moments. With their promotion hopes hanging in the balance, the team needs to rediscover their form and urgency to remain competitive in League Two.
