Birmingham City striker Lyndon Dykes has admitted to a challenging start at St Andrew’s but remains optimistic about his future.
The Scotland international, who joined from Queens Park Rangers in the summer, has had to bide his time amidst competition for places and injury setbacks.
Adapting to Life at Birmingham
Dykes, known for his physical presence and versatility, has found himself on the fringes of the starting XI this season. Competing with the likes of Jay Stansfield and Alfie May, his opportunities have been limited. Despite this, the 29-year-old insists he has embraced his role and is eager to contribute more.
“Of course I want to score goals. I have an all-round game but I want to score goals for the boys and get the opportunities to do that. It’s been a bit slower this season, but when the time comes and we’re needed, we have to be ready.”
Dykes’ only prior goal for Birmingham came in a cup tie against Fulham’s under-21s. His strike against Blackpool, expertly finishing a Brandon Khela pull-back, felt like a turning point.

Scotland Heartbreak and Injury Woes
The summer was particularly disappointing for Dykes, who missed out on representing Scotland at the European Championships due to a pre-camp injury. Reflecting on the setback, he remains philosophical, saying it has tested his resilience.
“It’s been difficult since the summer. I had the Euros in my mind and got injured pre-camp. Football isn’t easy and it shows the character of the person when you get through these things.”
Despite these challenges, Dykes is optimistic about his long-term prospects at Birmingham. He highlights the camaraderie within the squad as a key factor in their potential success this season.
Aiming for Consistency
Manager Chris Davies has spoken about Dykes’ ability to link play and work tirelessly off the ball, qualities that were evident in the FA Cup tie. Dykes himself is confident that, given consistent minutes, he can become a key figure in Birmingham’s push for success.
“I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve fitted in straight away. We all get on very well, and that’s key to the success we are going to have. I’m sure we’ll have a great season and hopefully many more years to come.”
Writer’s View
Lyndon Dykes’ journey at Birmingham City is a testament to perseverance. While his start has been slow, his ability to adapt and his positive mindset suggest that he could become a vital asset for the Blues. With more opportunities, Dykes has the potential to not only find the net consistently but also to play a significant role in Birmingham’s quest for promotion.
