‘I Won’t Accept That’ – Bruce Fumes As Blackpool Dumped Out Of FA Cup

Birmingham City advanced to the third round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, leaving former Blues boss Steve Bruce to rue his team’s lacklustre first-half performance.

Goals from Lyndon Dykes and Lukas Jutkiewicz gave the visitors an unassailable lead despite a spirited second-half fightback from the Seasiders.

First-Half Dominance Secures Blues’ Victory

The match began with Birmingham asserting their dominance. Dykes opened the scoring in the seventh minute, pouncing on a loose ball from a corner scramble to put the Blues ahead. Their advantage doubled just over 15 minutes later when Jutkiewicz reacted quickest to a rebound, delighting the travelling fans with a composed finish.

Despite their commanding start, Birmingham failed to extend their lead further, with Paik Seung-ho missing a golden opportunity from a yard out in the second half. However, their profligacy did not come back to haunt them as Blackpool struggled to create clear-cut chances to level the match.

Blackpool’s second-half resurgence was sparked by a tactical shake-up from Bruce, who made four substitutions at half-time. One of those changes, Jordan Rhodes, pulled a goal back for the hosts in the 56th minute, giving Blackpool hope of forcing extra time. Yet, their efforts were insufficient as Birmingham held firm to secure the win.

“I’m saying to you what I said to the players – the first half, I won’t accept that. The supporters have paid their hard-earned money to watch their team have a go. We were far too passive all around the pitch, we made it very easy for them,” Bruce told reporters post-match.

The former Birmingham manager expressed his frustration, admitting he had considered changing more than half the team at the interval. “I thought we needed to make four subs, but I could’ve changed eight or nine. It was too easy for them, and we didn’t make it a cup tie for them until half-time,” he added.

Blackpool’s defeat marks a disappointing early exit from the competition, with Bruce left to pick up the pieces from a lacklustre showing against his former club. Birmingham, on the other hand, continue their cup journey, hoping to build on their strong performance in the first half.

Writer’s View

Birmingham’s clinical first-half display highlights their ability to capitalise on opponents’ weaknesses, a promising trait for their ongoing campaign. Meanwhile, Steve Bruce’s candid critique of his players reflects a manager grappling with the inconsistency of his side. For Blackpool, the need for greater intensity and cohesion is clear if they are to turn their fortunes around in the league.
