Peterborough United have received a major boost following the news that a quartet of players are set to return from injury.
It’s been a tough opening few months to the campaign for Darren Ferguson’s team. After reaching the League One play-offs for two successive seasons, Posh have struggled for consistency this season. They have only won back-to-back games once, with that coming back in August.
Peterborough entered the international break with a dominant 6-1 win over local rivals Cambridge United at the Weston Homes Stadium, following on from a 5-1 victory over Blackpool in their previous home game. However, those games sandwiched a 1-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers, showcasing their inconsistency. As a result, they sit 12th in the table.
Injury Crisis
Part of the reason for Peterborough’s struggles have been injuries to key players. Captain Hector Kyprianou has been out of action since the beginning of October whilst Manchester City loanee Jadel Katongo has missed the last 10 games in all competitions.
Ferguson has also had to contest with the recent absence of goalkeeper Jed Steer, and summer signing Rio Adebisi is yet to play for the club since joining from Crewe Alexandra in July due to a knee injury.
Quartet Set To Return
According to The Peterborough Telegraph, all four players are set to return in the coming weeks. This weekend’s clash with Reading will come too soon however, although Katongo did feature for the under-21 side earlier today. As a result, he could play a part in the FA Cup second round clash with Notts County on November 30th.
The remaining trio have all been pencilled in for the trip to rivals Northampton Town on December 9th.
Writer’s View
The return of these four players will provide a major boost for Darren Ferguson. Although Peterborough currently sit in 12th, League One remains incredibly tight and they are just five points behind Lincoln City in sixth, the final play-off place. Having a bolstered squad at their disposal will provide a massive lift, especially as we enter the busy festive period. If Posh can use their increased numbers to start picking up some points, they could well find themselves back in the play-off conversation come May.
