Walsall Defender Hails ‘Unbelievable’ Talent

Walsall defender Liam Gordon has described teammate Jamie Jellis as “unbelievable” following the midfielder’s standout performances in the early stages of the League Two season.

The 23-year-old has become a key player for the Saddlers, contributing three goals in his last five starts and helping propel the team to second place in the league.

From Non-League to Key Contributor

Jellis, who joined Walsall from non-league Tamworth in January, has featured in 13 of the Saddlers’ 14 games this season, showcasing his reliability and versatility. Despite struggling with illness, he even played a crucial role in the final stages of their 2-2 draw against Chesterfield last month.

The midfielder has formed a strong partnership with Connor Barrett on the right-hand side, which has been pivotal in both league and cup competitions. Their dynamic connection has played a significant role in Walsall’s early-season success.

“JJ has been unbelievable. I was defending against him in training the other day and just his runs that he does especially when Taylor is on the ball with the diagonals into that area. It’s unbelievable. Him and Connor (Barrett) have just dominated that side,” said Gordon.

Driving Walsall’s Early Success

Walsall’s strong start to the season has seen them accumulate 27 points from their opening 14 league matches, placing them firmly in the promotion race. Gordon emphasised the impact of Jellis and Barrett’s partnership on the team’s performances, highlighting their ability to unlock defences and create opportunities down the right flank.

“They’ve got a really good connection, and we’ve seen across the season just how powerful those two are on that side. Hopefully, that just continues and we keep on serving them as best as we can and we’ll get joy from it both sides,” Gordon added.
