Gareth Ainsworth has discussed how the January transfer window could look for his new side, as reported by The Shropshire Star.
Ainsworth has seven weeks to assess his squad before the window opens.
Open Minds
Despite the club being in a precarious position at the foot of the table, the new manager insists adding players in January is not guaranteed.
“It’s football. If we win every game from now to January, I won’t be looking at anything.”
“That’ll be your answer to that. We have to have our minds open. I think every single football club in this country will have lists for January.”
The former Queens Park Rangers manager is keen to use the seven matches between now and January to assess his squad and identify what he may need moving forward.
“Sorry to repeat myself, but I have to assess the current squad now with games coming up and training coming up to really see what I need.”
Ainsworth’s Wycombe Wanderers had a style of play that ultimately proved highly successful, and the new man in charge at Salop will be looking for those players who suit his approach.
“To see what suits my style of play. Who knows, I might have a group who really do and it’d be great to see if we can get through these next few weeks and months with some victories.”
A Tough Challenge
The task facing Ainsworth could barely be a tougher one. Shrewsbury already find themselves six points from safety and have only managed two league victories all season.
He takes over a side who have lost the last six in all competitions and have scored just once during that run.
Ainsworth has a very good record as a League One manager, with a win percentage close to 45%. He will need to replicate that form immediately with his new side if they are to stand any chance of reaching safety.
Writer’s View
This is an excellent appointment for Shrewsbury Town. It is something of a coup to have attracted a League One promotion-winning manager to a relegation scrap.
It’s a huge challenge for Ainsworth and one that will test his managerial credentials to the full.
