Peterborough United Chairman Makes Kwame Poku Admission

Darragh MacAnthony expects that Peterborough United‘s star player Kwame Poku will leave the club at the end of the season.

The winger has been in electric form for Posh this season and despite the club’s best efforts the 23-year-old has turned down a new deal and will leave when his contract expires in June.

“The Nature Of The Beast”

Poku has been the standout performer across League One this season and has 15 goals and assists in as many games in the third tier. He is one of the few stars who remained at London Road over the summer when the club lost key figures such as Harrison Burrows to Sheffield United and Ronnie Edwards to Southampton.

Speaking on his Hard Truths Podcast, MacAnthony was seemingly resigned to the departure of Poku, saying (Quotes via Peterborough Telegraph):

“We did make him a club record offer, but he knows it’s time for him to go to the next level. We hope he wins promotion with us first.

“Kwame probably won’t go to the Premier League straight away, but he will get a high-end Championship club. He will be a Premier League star in the future and that next move will probably cost £30 million.

“We spent £250k on him initially (from Colchester United), plus half a million in add ons since then. He’s top drawer. He has everything, a great technique, pace and physicality.

“It will have been a pleasure to have him for four years, but he will leave with our best wishes. Fans should stop worrying about players leaving for better things as it’s the law of the jungle, the nature of the beast and new heroes will come in.”

The Posh chairman also revealed that the club turned down an offer over the summer to the sum of £3 million, with a further £3 million in add-ons.

Writer’s View

Kwame Poku is the latest success story in what is probably one of the best-run clubs in the country. Peterborough United have a real keen eye for seeing the potential in players and making serious amounts of cash as a result of selling them on. The next crop of talent is already forming at the club with players like Malik Mothersille and James Donnelly beginning to show their talents this season.
