Wycombe Wanderers continued their incredible run of form as demolished Stockport County 5-0 at Edgeley Park to leap above Birmingham City in the League One table.
The Chairboys are now unbeaten in seven league matches, a run that includes six victories.
Game Over Inside 20 Minutes
Matt Bloomfield’s men shot out of the blocks and were out of sight before their hosts realised they were in a game.
It took the visitors just ten minutes to get in front with Richard Kone converting from the spot after Dan Udoh was bundled to the ground by County defender Fraser Horsfall. Kone stepped up to send Corey Addai in the home goal the wrong way.
It was 2-0 just a minute later as Fred Onyedinma latched onto a loose ball down the Wycombe right and drove towards the edge of the County box. Onyedinma shifted the ball onto his left foot before rifling low to Addai’s left from 18 yards.
The game was all but over after 18 minutes when Kone was on hand to tap in from close range after the home keeper had attempted to gather a low cross from the left.
Demolition Completed
It took Wycombe until the 70th minute to add to their tally. Not to be outdone by his teammate Kone, Onyedinma grabbed his second of the night following a well-worked short corner.
The ball was played short and eventually made its way to Cameron Humphreys who delivered a lovely cross with his left foot. Former Luton striker Onyedinma found himself with acres of room on the six-yard line and headed comfortably past Addai.
An impressive night’s work was rounded off with 13 minutes left when Aaron Morley struck low to Addai’s right from the edge of the area following a throw-in from deep in Stockport territory.
Matt Bloomfields Reaction
The Wycombe manager was understandably delighted with his side’s victory but insisted there was no room to get carried away.
“We’re really fortunate to have a real special group of young men and I’m really proud of them.”
“I want to keep a lid on it because there’s so long to go. We’ve done a lot of work over the summer and putting some stuff in place, but we’ve got a tough game at Wigan on Saturday and all our focus now has to be on recovering, preparing and making sure we turn up there…”
