Our 3 predictions for Preston North End vs Sunderland

  • 1st prediction: Sunderland to win or draw 8/25
  • 2nd prediction: Both teams to score 21/25
  • 3rd prediction: Over 3.5 goals in the game 14/5

1st prediction for Preston North End vs Sunderland: Sunderland to win or draw 8/25

This is perhaps the easiest prediction to make for this game. Sunderland are flying high at the top of the table, with their attacking talent having really clicked under new boss Regis Le Bris, leaving them three points clear at the top having lost just twice in the league. For Preston, however, things couldn’t be more different. They lie 20th, just two points from the relegation zone having struggled all season. With the Lilywhites winless in four and Sunderland resurgent, a favourable result for the visitors looks likely.

2nd prediction for Preston North End vs Sunderland: Both teams to score 21/25

Despite their poor run of late, Preston are at least decent going forward. They’ve scored in seven of their last eight having picked up offensively under new boss Paul Heckingbottom, though their league position still needs improvement. As for Sunderland, they’re even more likely to hit the net. While Jobe Bellingham is suspended, they have plenty of attacking quality and are the league’s highest scorers. With their success and Preston’s struggles this is likely to continue, and it will be a surprise if they don’t score a few on Wednesday night.

3rd prediction for Preston North End vs Sunderland: Over 3.5 goals in the game 14/5

Again, this is likely to be a goal fest judging by the two teams’ recent records. Sunderland themselves could hit this bet, with 23 goals so far this season. They aren’t the best at the back as of late, so Preston could well hit a couple themselves. Sunderland are however, prone to thrashing bottom half sides, as shown earlier this season against Cardiff. With the Black Cats scoring in all but one league game this season, plus Preston’s recent scoring record, there will be goals in this one.

Full preview of the game: last results and head to head

These are two sides with very different fortunes; Sunderland looking for promotion and flying high at the top of the table, with Preston looking over their shoulder looking to stay up. Recent form places Sunderland as hot favourites having won seven of their last eight. Preston’s form is more inconsistent with a win, two draws and a loss from their last four.

In terms of this fixture’s history, it’s pretty mixed. Preston and Sunderland both have two victories in the last four, with the hosts victorious when the two sides met in the Carabao Cup in August. Sunderland will therefore be out for a revenge, and they’ve got to be counted as favourites for this game.
