Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho has said that Callum Lang has emerged as ‘one of the first names on the teamsheet’ in his short time with the club.
The 26-year-old headed to south coast for an undisclosed fee in January as Pompey looked to cement their place in the Championship. He played a key role as the club went on to secure the League One title.
Despite many predicting a comfortable first campaign in the Championship, the club have found themselves in an early battle for survival. They are currently rooted to the foot of the table having picked up just one win from their opening 13 games. However, they did secure a respectable point against Hull City at the MKM Stadium at the weekend.
John Mousinho Praises Lang Form
Whilst it has largely been a miserable time at Fratton Park in recent months, the form of Lang has been one of the only plus points. He is Portsmouth’s top scorer with four, but has also impressed when he has not been amongst the goals.
This has led to Mousinho praising the versatile attacker, claiming he has emerged as a key star. Speaking to The News, the 38-year-old said:
“If you had a list of our best performers this season, it wouldn’t be a huge list at the moment – and hopefully that grows as the season goes on.
“But certainly Callum is right up there. He has been one of our best players and is one of the first names on the teamsheet. He’s a really important player.
“Even when he hasn’t scored and hasn’t got the assists, he gives us so much in terms of energy, athleticism and willingness to press. Look at the amount he creates just off the back of being a real nuisance up top.”

Portsmouth really need to start picking up points and Callum Lang is likely to be a player who is key to that. Pompey face a potential six-pointer tomorrow night when they travel to fellow relegation candidates Plymouth Argyle knowing three points would see them move above Wayne Rooney’s team on goal difference. Mousinho needs more players to raise their game to Lang’s level if they are hoping to avoid making their stay in the Championship a brief one.
