The draw for the FA Cup second round has been made, throwing up some intriguing fixtures.
It’s been an excellent weekend of football, with the first round fixtures showcasing exactly what the competition is all about. It is the first time that the opening round has been played without the benefit of a replay.
Non-league Guisley suffered heartbreak by losing to Stevenage on penalties, whilst Bristol Rovers needed extra time to overcome Weston-Super-Mare. Elsewhere, Gainsborough Trinity recovered from 3-0 down on the road to Hednesford Town to eventually progress to the second stage on penalties for the first time in 72 years. Kettering Town also benefitted from the lack of replays to record a 2-1 win over local rivals Northampton Town after extra time at Sixfields.

Other notable results included Cheltenham Town beating Rotherham United at the New York Stadium and Harrogate Town prematurely ending another fairytale against Wrexham. Simon Weaver’s side are rewarded for their efforts with a home tie against Gainsborough. Meanwhile, Harborough Town will be delighted to have been drawn against former Premier League side Reading at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
There is still one first round fixture left to play, with National League outfit Chesham United hosting League One promotion contenders Lincoln City tomorrow night.
