Wrexham will not make a decision on the future of Jack Marriott until the striker returns from injury next year, according to The Wrexham Insider.
The 30-year-old has been in sublime form this season, scoring five times in 10 League One appearances. This makes him the Red Dragons’ top goalscorer, with the Welsh outfit aiming for a third successive promotion.
Marriott joined the club from Fleetwood Town in February, penning an 18-month deal. Despite struggling in his early months, the attacker has taken to life in League One well. He opened his account in the opening day win over Wycombe Wanderers before netting in three successive games between late August and September.
His last outing came at the beginning of October, where he scored the winner in a 1-0 victory over Northampton. However, disaster soon struck for the former Peterborough United man.
Injury Halts Marriott Progress
After Marriott was not named in the matchday squad against Rotherham United last month, manager Phil Parkinson confirmed the player had suffered a broken fibula:
“Jack took a shot on the training ground with nobody anywhere near him and his foot just went beneath him and he has broken his fibula.
“He’ll have an operation on Monday and we’ll probably be without him for four months but we’ll get him the best treatment possible so that he can still contribute more to our season.”
Contract Talks On Hold
With Marriott’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, it is now being claimed that Wrexham will wait until later in the season before making a decision on the striker’s future.
It is said that he will have to earn himself a new deal, despite his early season form. This bears extra weight when taking into consideration that the Welsh outfit may be playing Championship football next season.
Writer’s View
Marriott’s injury could not have come at a worse time. He struggled to adapt to life at Wrexham in League Two last season but really hit the ground running after the summer break. After taking advantage of the club’s shortage of attackers in August, he had nailed down a place in Phil Parkinson’s team. Although out until at least February, if he can rediscover that form, he will surely earn himself a new deal, regardless of what division they are playing in. After all, the striker is experienced in the Championship should they earn promotion.
