Birmingham City Midfielder Reveals Frustration

Birmingham City midfielder Marc Leonard has revealed his frustration over his lack of playing time although insists knew what he was walking into when he signed for the club in the summer.

The 22-year-old joined the Blues in July from Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion as manager Chris Davies looked to rebuild the squad following their relegation from the Championship last season. Leonard arrived with League One pedigree after winning Northampton Town’s fans and players Player of the Season during his two seasons on loan with the club.

Competition for places at St Andrew’s is high following Birmingham’s summer spending spree. The ex-Scotland under 21 international did begin the campaign in the starting lineup, starting the first three league fixtures. However, the signing of Tomoki Iwata from Celtic at the end of August has limited his appearances since.

Cup Rotation

Although Leonard’s league outings have been reduced, he has been used heavily in cup competitions. He started both of the West Midlanders Carabao Cup games in August and has also been utilised in the EFL Trophy, most recently playing 90 minutes in the 7-1 win over Fulham under 21s earlier this week.

Birmingham travel to League Two’s Sutton United on Sunday in the FA Cup first round, where the midfielder could retain his place.

Leonard Admits Frustration

Although Leonard has revealed he is frustrated by the situation, he admits that he knew competition for places would be high when he joined the club. Speaking to Birmingham Livehe said:

“I did [realise] because I realised that the level of the club and how big the club is and I won’t shy away from anything. I think I train every day as hard as I possibly can and when I come on, I want to make as much impact as I can, or if I’m starting I want to do the exact same.

“I think the boys who have been playing have been unbelievable so far, and it’s been difficult and it’s been frustrating but you just have to get on with it, that’s football and I’m definitely not going to shy away from anything.”

Joining Birmingham was always going to be a risk for Marc Leonard. He would’ve been aware of what had been spent prior to his arrival and that it was likely more would join after him. However, he has signed a four-year contract, is a quality player and he will still receive plenty of opportunities. It is a long season and the squad will need to be rotated as the games come thick and fast.
