Sheffield Wednesday Set For Huge Injury Blow

Sheffield Wednesday could be set to lose defender Akin Famewo for an extended period of time, with manager Danny Rohl admitting his fears after last night’s 2-1 win over Portsmouth.

The 25-year-old had started all of the Owls’ previous seven games leading into the clash at Fratton Park, and he was once again named in the starting lineup last night. However, disaster struck when the former Norwich City man limped off with just under half an hour on the clock.

It was a change which altered the trajectory of the game. Pompey took the lead just before half time through Conor Ogilvie as John Mousinho’s team looked to bounce back from Tuesday’s disappointing defeat at Cardiff City.

Wednesday rallied in the second half though. Goals from Josh Windass and Michael Smith eventually secured the three points, sending the Yorkshire side up to 11th in the Championship.

Win Dampened By Injury

Danny Rohl’s side have recovered from a slow start to the season by losing just one of their last six league outings. The German will be left sweating on the fitness of Famewo ahead of the trip to Brentford in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, although he admitted to The Star that the outlook doesn’t look good:

“At the moment I think it could be a big, big muscle injury. When you go in such a moment, you are straight away down? (squirms). Maybe the area is better than when he is holding at the back (hamstring), but we will see. We will scan. I feel for him, he has been very strong.

“We will find solutions and we have to be honest, we are still just in October, it is a busy time with November and December to come. With this we have to recover, recover, recover, we need rotation with the squad.”

Writer’s View

This could undoubtedly be a blow for Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls have lost just two games this season with Famewo in the team and they will be hoping that the injury isn’t as bad as first feared. The ex-Charlton Athletic loanee also played a major role in the club’s survival last season and whilst ambitions are higher this season, they will need the centre-back at their disposal in the coming weeks, especially with big games against the likes of Watford, Norwich and bitter rivals Sheffield United on the hoizon.
