Wycombe Wanderers striker Richard Kone has made a flying start to the 2024/25 season and acknowledged the support he has received from more experienced players at Adams Park.
Kone is the Chairboys’ top scorer this season after notching eight goals in 16 appearances in all competitions. The Ivory Coast forward continued his impressive form with a hat-trick on Saturday during Wycombe’s 3-1 win over Peterborough United.
Kone Praises Veteran Wycombe Wanderers Players
It hasn’t always been plain sailing for Kone. Last season, he struggled to hold a regular first-team spot in the Wycombe starting XI and scored just three goals in 17 League One appearances. However, the 21-year-old has hit top form recently and Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield has entrusted Kone to lead the line. The former non-league striker has made eight League One starts already this season.
Speaking about his recent form to the Bucks Free Press, Kone said he always wants to find ways to improve. In addition, the Ivory Coast striker pointed to the support of several more experienced players who have helped him to improve at the League One level this season.
It’s down to the work that we do at the training ground. We’re always working to try and learn. I always want to improve myself, so I am also learning from the boys as well.
Learning from players like GMac [Gararth McCleary], Dan [Harvie], [Luke] Leahy, Sam Vokes…they are all trying to help me do well in this league and I am really pleased.
Wycombe are flying high in League One this season. The Buckinghamshire outfit are third in the table and just one point behind second-place Wrexham. Bloomfield’s side are also undefeated in nine consecutive league games, winning seven. As a result of the Chairboys’ excellent form, Kone believes there’s a genuine good feeling around the club currently.
There is no negativity as we all want each other to do well. We have that positivity in the group.
Writer’s View
Kone has shown great levels early this season and maintaining this strong goalscoring form consistently will be the next step. If the 21-year-old can take all he can from colleagues with long and impressive careers in the EFL, he will have plenty of know-how to apply to what could be his most successful season so far. Overall, it’s been an impressive journey for the youngster, who joined from non-league side Athletic Newham in 2023.
