Blackburn Rovers Star Offers Contract Extension Hope

Blackburn Rovers have surprised many this season with a very promising start to their campaign. One man who has been performing well is Andreas Weimann, but his contract situation is up in the air.

Having signed on a one-year deal with the Lancashire side this summer, the 33-year-old appears likely to extend his stay at Ewood Park beyond this season.

What Is Weimann’s Current Stance?

When speaking to 90 Minuten, the Austrian explained his positive stance on lengthening his contract and his reasons for wanting to do so:

“Staying is not dependent on promotion, I’ve been active in the Championship for nine years. We’ll see how the season goes. I can’t say yet what will happen next.

“I’ve played in every game so far, hopefully this trend continues. At the end of the season, it will be clear whether I stay at Blackburn or not. Of course, I hope to stay.

Two goals in nine matches for Blackburn, including a phenomenal strike against Burnley, has been enough to place Rovers eighth in the table and still within an outside shout of play-off contention. Weimann spent just shy of six years with Bristol City before moving to Lancashire, following a successful half-season loan spell with West Bromwich Albion.

“Blackburn is a big, traditional club that has already won the Premier League. I’ve always been lucky enough to play for big clubs. I don’t see a big difference to Blackburn.

“I have a one-year contract. I really like it here. Of course, it depends on the club whether they want to extend my contract.

The Lancashire outfit face Swansea City this weekend, having lost their previous two league games. 3-0 to Coventry City as well as a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Plymouth Argyle might have dented Blackburn’s momentum as they continue to progress under John Eustace.

A contract extension should certainly be handed to Weimann – the Austrian has been exceptional despite only four starts. An important goal has already rescued a point for Rovers against a quality side like Burnley.

The 33-year-old has a plethora of Championship clubs under his belt, with an accumulative appearance total that highlights the mass of experience he holds. With this signing, Blackburn have somewhat replaced the goals that they heavily relied on Sammie Szmodics for last season and have improved defensively too.
