Exeter City goalkeeper Joe Whitworth said his impressive recent form can be credited to the entire team and not just his own individual performances following the Gecians’ solid start to the League One season.
Whitworth joined Exeter on loan from Premier League side Crystal Palace in the summer and has made an immediate impact for the Devonshire club. The goalkeeper has started nine consecutive League One matches this season and kept six clean sheets, per Transfermarkt. He has also conceded just six league goals, helping Exeter to record the second-best defensive record in the division.
Exeter City’s Joe Whitworth Highlights Team Efforts
Although Whitworth has earned the plaudits for a strong start to the 2024/25 League Two campaign, he has also attributed the work of his teammates. The Grecians are seventh in the table and could climb up to fourth if they defeat 21st-placed Shrewsbury Town on Thursday evening. After losing two of their opening three league games, Gary Caldwell’s side have won four of their following six, conceding just twice, recorded by Whoscored.
Speaking to the official Exeter City website ahead of the Shrewsbury clash, the 20-year-old explained the team are now ready to build their five-match unbeaten streak.
Goalies are only looked at for clean sheets – but it comes from the front all the way down to me. But we have just come back from the international break so we are ready to kick on now.
We have had the chance over the break to work on what hasn’t been so good, and sharpen what has, so we are full focus into Shrewsbury now.
There is no easy game in this league and they have been ona. good run, scored five and got a good result at Bolton, but we are really looking forward to it and showing what we can do.
Writer’s View
Whitworth has taken to life well in an Exeter shirt and has cemented his place as the Grecians’ number one. He is also targeting a fifth consecutive clean sheet in the Shrewsbury fixture this week. However, if the 20-year-old achieves this feat, he will likely praise another strong team performance – a trait that is starting to make Caldwell’s side look like potential promotion hopefuls.
