Walsall Boss Confirms Injury Blow

Mat Sadler has confirmed that Josh Gordon will be seeing a specialist following a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The striker was forced off the pitch after 18 minutes during Walsall‘s 2-1 win over Cheltenham Town at the end of August. He arrived at Bescot permanently this summer after a half-season loan from Burton Albion.

It is his second spell at the West Midlands club after a four-year spell earlier in his career. The game against The Robins was his 150th appearance in club colours, having scored 29 times.

Having initially been expected to be back in time for this weekend’s clash against Salford City, the 29-year-old will now see a specialist on Monday to further examine the issue. Sadler said in his pre-match press conference (Quotes via Express and Star): “Josh hasn’t quite come as quickly as we’d have liked. He’s going to see a specialist on Monday just to see what that looks like now.

“It was his hamstring so we just need to get him assessed. We’d hoped he’d be further along than he is currently.

“We’ve got to find out if that’s something different and get it looked at. It’s a bit of a kick in the teeth because we thought he’d be back by now and clearly he isn’t so we’ve got to investigate.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, George Hall is a doubt following an injury during The Saddlers’ EFL Trophy game against Fulham’s under-21s. Both Donervon Daniels and Brandon Comley are expected to be fit after returning to fitness during the midweek game.

Walsall face Salford on the road on Saturday after a strong start to the season for the away side. After four wins and two defeats, they are currently fourth in the table having been knocked off the top following a loss to a struggling MK Dons.

Karl Robinson’s side are in 13th place having also beaten the Buckinghamshire side, and Sadler was keen to emphasise the ability of his opponents. He added: “I think this is the best Salford team I’ve seen in a little while.”

“I watched them on the TV against MK Dons a couple of weeks ago. I thought the same when I was watching that, they’ve got some really good threats and a really strong squad, but that doesn’t surprise me.
“Karl [Robinson] knows the level very well and knows the level above very well and knows the vision that he wants to see his team play, so it doesn’t surprise me that they’re looking strong.”

Whilst a big blow to lose a key striker like Josh Gordon, Walsall have continued to flourish in his absence. Jamille Matt and even centre-back Taylor Allen have been providing the goals, both scoring last time out in the win over Bradford City. It is certainly a setback, but not one that will define their season.
They face a Salford side that has become hard to beat in recent weeks. Whilst they haven’t scored many, they do not concede either. They have done well to hold both The Bantams and Chesterfield to draws on the road. Whilst Moor Lane has not been as much as a fortress as Karl Robinson would like, the result against his former side in MK Dons could be a sign of things to come in Greater Manchester.
