Gillingham boss Mark Bonner has suggested that young talent Joe Gbode could be sent out on loan to aid his development.
The future of the 19-year-old remains uncertain even as he continues to impress on the pitch. In Tuesday’s EFL Trophy clash at Priestfield against League One side Peterborough United, Gbode stood out while playing on the right wing.
Although the teenager has made several substitute appearances for the Gills this season, first-team manager Mark Bonner revealed that Gbode’s role is yet to be fully determined. A loan spell could be on the cards, but performances like Tuesday’s will keep him in contention for more first-team action.
Bonner told Kent Online: “I think probably at some point this season he’ll go on loan, but that just depends whether he gets in our team and influences starting games.”
“If everybody’s fit, the balance will be how much is he influencing our starting team versus how much football he needs to play to keep developing. That’s a sweet spot you’ve got to try and get right.”
Bonner acknowledged the possibility of keeping Gbode with the squad but also recognised the importance of regular playtime for the forward’s development: “Selfishly, I would just probably say ‘stay with us all the time’. But if he’s not making squads, or he’s only playing small parts of games, that’s not going to help him become the player he needs to be.”
Gbode has showcased versatility while at Gillingham, having played both as a winger and striker. While he was deployed on the right flank during pre-season and Tuesday’s match, Bonner sees him as a natural number nine, a role he believes Gbode can excel in with more development.
“Players that can play in multiple positions in the top areas of the pitch are invaluable. He’s adjusting and learning how we want our wide players to perform, but ultimately, he’s a number nine,” Bonner added.
Born in 2004, Joe Gbode began his career in Gillingham’s youth system, signing his first professional contract with the club in 2021. Initially used as a wide player, Gbode’s technical abilities and pace saw him transition into a striker role as he developed through the ranks.
Though still early in his career, Gbode’s performances have drawn attention, with many seeing him as a promising talent for the Gills.
Gbode isn’t the only young player making his mark at the club. Alex Giles has also gained valuable minutes in cup fixtures, while right-back Harry Webster and midfielder Harry Waldock have been involved with the first team this season.
Fellow young talent Sam Gale, currently on loan at Chelmsford City, played a key role in their 5-1 win over Maidstone United this week, highlighting Gillingham’s commitment to nurturing emerging players.

It’s such a balancing act for managers to encourage youth through and ensure they get the necessary time to develop. Gdobe is clearly a precocious talent, but where are his needs nest served? Are you on the bench in Kent, or are you playing non-league football regularly?
As Gbode continues to grow and impress, his future, whether at Gillingham or on loan, looks bright. Perhaps a loan to a local non-league side would be best, especially if they’re part-time, as he would remain with the Gills training in the week. That helps keep a young player around the core group, but also gives them senior football.
