Sheffield United Negotiating for Premier League Forward

Sheffield United are looking to sign Southampton winger Samuel Edozie on loan as the Championship outfit aims to bolster their attacking options before the summer window shuts.

As reported by Football Insider, the Blades have started negotiating with the Saints to sign the 21-year-old. However, the publication also stated that the former Man City man may take some convincing, as he is unsure about playing in the Championship.

In addition, the former Millwall youth player has already played a part in Southampton’s Premier League campaign. Since their promotion to the top-flight, Russell Martin’s side have played twice and Edozie has featured from the bench two times. He also played a full 90 minutes in Southampton’s 5-3 EFL Cup victory over Cardiff on Wednesday.

Despite scoring nine goals in their opening five matches in all competitions this season, the Blades are seemingly eager to add more firepower in attack. Moreover, the Yorkshire club have largely relied on goals around the pitch. Midfielders Gustavo Hamer and Oliver Arblaster have scored twice in three 2024/25 Championship games, per Whoscored.

Sheffield United have been busy in the summer transfer window so far. Since suffering relegation from the Premier League, the Blades have added 10 new players to their squad. In addition, they have allowed 14 players to depart for fees or on free transfers, as recorded by Transfermarkt.

Wilder appears keen to bring players with Championship experience into his squad. Arrivals like Callum O’Hare, Kieffer Moore and Tyrese Campbell demonstrate the club’s focus on proven experience. Ultimately, Edozie would fit this mould.

Despite his young age, the 21-year-old has Premier League and Championship experience. He made 17 top-flight appearances in 2022/23 and played 32 second-tier games last season. Moreover, he showed an ability to produce in the Championship with Southampton, scoring six goals and making three assists, as reported by Transfermarkt.

Writer’s View

A late Sheffield United move for Edozie is ambitious and would cap a decent transfer market for the Blades. Wilder’s squad is already loaded with young talent and Championship quality players and Edozie would only improve the level.

However, there appears to be doubt from the Saints’ player about this move. If he has already had chances to play in the Premier League, will he drop down a division? The 21-year-old was favoured by Martin last season in the Championship and he might be looking to make an impact at St Mary’s rather than taking on a new challenge at Brammall Lane.
