According to the South London Press, Championship outfit Millwall are set to sign Liverpool defender Calum Scanlon on a season-long loan deal.
The 19-year-old moved to Merseyside in early 2021, after being on the books of Birmingham City. Scanlon has represented England at U19, U18, and U17 levels. He is set to experience his first loan spell away from Anfield, and is set to link up Neil Harris and his squad.
Scanlon has made his competitive debut for Liverpool, coming on as a substitute in the Reds’ Europa League clash with Toulouse in October 2023. He signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool in April and now looks to experience a stint in Championship football.
Millwall have had a relatively quiet window in terms of signings, with six new players coming through the door at the Den. Among them is striker Macauley Langstaff, who scored 70 goals in just under 100 appearances for League Two side Notts County. Returning loanee Japhet Tanganga, Daniel Kelly, Femi Azeez and goalkeepers Lukas Jensen and Liam Roberts have also all joined Langstaff in walking through the door in East London.
Former manager Joe Edwards was sacked after just four months at the helm last season, with former manager Harris taking the hot seat at the club for the third time in February 2024. Harris managed to steer the club away from any troubles regarding a potential relegation scrap, with the club finishing last season in 13th place, narrowly avoiding relegation by a margin of nine points in the end.
The Lions are still hoping to have a better season this season, despite their poor start to the 2024/25 campaign. They remain winless in the Championship so far, picking up one point from a potential nine, with their only win so far coming in the EFL Cup. Despite progressing through to the second round of the cup, a loss against League One side Leyton Orient last night means they will not progress any further in that competition.
They look set to improve defensively with the signing of Scanlon, as they continue to look for that all-important first win in the Championship.

It’s blatantly clear that Millwall require more recruits before the transfer deadline shuts in just two days. With an ageing backline, Scanlon could provide the legs that the backline desperately needs to be a stable side in the Championship this season.
Despite Scanlon only being 19, Liverpool rewarding him with a new long-term contract just months ago shows the belief in the teenager that the Premier League side has. As seen with multiple youth academy talents in recent years, the Reds do give chances to their youngsters, not only in domestic competitions but in European competitions as well. A move away could provide pivotal experience if he wants to go on and have an illustrious career within the game. A temporary move away from Anfield to play first-team, competitive football at a high level is a smart risk to take. Players at this age need game time to develop, and a move to the Championship makes sense for the youngster and benefits all parties involved in this deal.
