Plymouth Argyle Chase League One Goalkeeper

Plymouth Argyle are close to the signing of Blackpool goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook on X.

The Pilgrims are in the market for a man between the sticks, having lost academy product Michael Cooper to Sheffield United earlier in the window, and their search looks to be coming to an end with Grimshaw reportedly set to make the switch to Home Park.

26-year-old Grimshaw came through the academy at Manchester City but failed to make a senior appearance for the club, playing for the club’s youth teams throughout his stint at the club. While at City, Grimshaw was sent on loan twice, to non-league Hemel Hempstead Town and Belgian club SK Lommel respectively.

The shot-stopper then made the move to his current club in 2021, establishing himself as first choice between the sticks at Bloomfield Road. Despite the Lancashire outfit missing out on the play-offs, last season was particularly successful for Grimshaw, with the Salford-born ‘keeper recording 18 clean sheets. It’s this form which has prompted the hierarchy at Plymouth to look at Grimshaw, who now looks set to sign in Devon as replacement for the popular Cooper.

It’s been a mixed start to the season for Wayne Rooney’s team, with many tipping them for a return to League One after two seasons in the second tier. Their season got off to a disastrous start with a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday before picking up their first point in a 1-1 draw against Hull City. The club have struggled defensively thus far this season and a new man in goal looks to be a must; Plymouth fans will be hoping that Grimshaw can change their fortunes at the back if he signs.

Writer’s View

Plymouth desperately need a new goalkeeper, and they look to have found one in Grimshaw. He’s been fantastic in League One and it will be interesting to see if he can make the step up and help Argyle survive. They needed to reinvest quickly following Michael Cooper’s sale and a poor start to the season, and Grimshaw looks to be a safe pair of hands. Whether it’s enough for survival, however, is hard to judge.
