Championship Duo to Battle for Premier League Striker

Championship clubs Sunderland and Leeds United are looking to sign striker Daniel Jebbison on loan from Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth before the summer transfer window shuts.

The Championship pair are linked with a move for the 21-year-old, as reported by the Sunderland Echo. Currently, the Black Cats are reportedly still in the market to bolster their forward line. Leeds are also seeking attacking reinforcements after Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville departed Elland Road.

Jebbison has emerged as a target for the second-tier rivals. Bournemouth only signed the striker in July after his contract expired at Brammal Lane. However, Sky Sports reported that the Premier League outfit is eager to loan out Jebbison so he can get further playing experience.

The former Blades frontman joined Bournemouth on a four-year deal this summer. Also, the South Coast club paid a £1.5 million training fee to secure his signature. He featured just once in Sheffield United’s 2023/24 Premier League campaign following an injury-hit season, per Transfermakrt.

Sunderland’s search for a striker has been ongoing throughout the summer. The Black Cats were heavily linked with SM Caen forward Alexandre Mendy before interest cooled in the Guinea-Bissau international.

Leeds have also been linked with forwards during this transfer window. The Whites continue to pursue Norwich City forward Jonathan Rowe. Ultimately, the Yorkshire outfit is working on replacements for the likes of Summerville and Rutter.

While both Championship teams are seemingly interested in Jebbison, they could face stiff competition from elsewhere. The Athletic also reported that the Canadian-born striker has attracted interest from a host of Championship clubs. Moreover, the top-flight side is unlikely to decide on Jebbison’s destination until later in the window.

Sunderland and Leeds have made contrasting starts to the 2024/25 Championship campaign. The Black Cats won their opening two matches and thumped Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 on Sunday. It has been a bright start under new boss, Regis Le Bris who is even looking to strengthen depth to compliment current first-choice striker Eliezer Mayenda.

However, pre-season Championship favourites Leeds have drawn their opening two matches and lost 3-0 at home against Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup. In addition, Daniel Farke’s are yet to move to replace departing talents and actions are needed if they want to strengthen.

Early season form can act as an audition for potential incoming players. On recent performances, Sunderland might be the more appealing option for Jebbison and Bournemouth. Yet Leeds can attract top-level talent. The likes of Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rondon and Joe Rothwell (also from Bournemouth) signed in the past two seasons.
