Following an impressive promotion campaign in League One last season, Portsmouth have made a statement signing as they introduce themselves to the second tier.
Matt Ritchie, who has played for Newcastle United since June 2016, has now re-signed for Pompey. The 34-year-old appeared 215 times for the Tyneside club, and also accumulated 142 for Bournemouth prior to this.
Having graduated through the Portsmouth youth set-up, this is a welcomed return for the Scotland international and one that adds much-needed experience to the newly-promoted, Championship side. Despite being a product of the Hampshire club, Ritchie only played ten times for his boyhood team, before being sold to Swindon Town in January 2011.

Ritchie was released by Newcastle this summer as they look to continue their growth domestically and in Europe, but also in ambition. The winger, who can be considered a very versatile option in most areas of the pitch, has agreed a two-year-deal with Portsmouth and John Mousinho has already spoken highly of his latest arrival.
“Everyone will know what Matt is all about because he’s had a fantastic Premier League career. I’m sure all the fans have tracked his incredible progress since he was last at the club and been pleased by what he’s achieved.
“It’s a transfer that’s been talked about for a long time and it’s amazing that we’ve been able to get it done.
“As well as playing in the top-flight for a number of seasons, Matt also has plenty of experience a this level, having been promoted from the Championship a couple of times.
“It’s one of those signings that will provide a real boost around the place because he’s a fantastic player and in very good physical condition. We’re very excited to have him here.”
