Luton Town In Talks Over European Transfer

Turkish outfit Alanyaspor have entered into talks with Luton Town over the possible transfer of Andros Townsend, according to journalist Resat Can Ozbudak.

Having missed the entirety of the 2022/23 campaign through injury, the 33-year-old found himself without a club following his release from Everton. He initially joined Burnley on trial, where he was offered a permanent contract. However, the move fell through, and the winger started last season without a club.

Luton came knocking and he completed a move to Kenilworth Road in October on a short-term contract. He played a prominent role under Rob Edwards prior to Christmas which eventually led to him securing a longer deal.

The Hatters saw their brief stay in the Premier League come to an end in May, although their performances earned plaudits from media and supporters alike. They kick off their Championship campaign next month as one of the pre-season promotion favourites, especially as they have largely kept their squad in-tact as things stand.

Ross Barkley, Ryan Giles, Gabriel Osho and Luke Berry have all departed the club this summer. It is said that Tahith Chong is also attracting interest from across the continent, with reports emerging earlier this week that Luton have slapped a £10 million price tag on his head.

With the attention seemingly on the Dutchman’s future, news of Townsend has seemingly slipped under the radar. Via Sport WitnessTurkish media claim that Alanyaspor are interested in acquiring the services of the former England international and have already entered into talks with the Bedfordshire-based side.

The Super Lig outfit are reportedly keen to recruit the winger as they look to bolster their squad. They finished eighth last season, a position they hope to improve this time around as they target a place in European competition.

Sport Witness do state that there is no confirmation as to whether the links are true, although do point out that Townsend has been a target for clubs in Turkey in the past.

There could be some substance to this, but it’s difficult to see this move materialising. Townsend was offered a lifeline by Luton last year and eventually earned himself a contract until 2026.

At this stage of his career, it would be unwise to give up the security of a contract with a club where he is likely to play regularly, especially in the Championship. Still, it will be interesting to see if the Hatters entertain any advances and whether their offer would be financially beneficial to both the club and the player. You have to feel that it would take a big wage to tempt the ex-Tottenham Hotspur man into leaving for the continent.
