Former Norwich City defender Danny Mills has identified recruitment as being a key pillar to potential success for the Canaries ahead of the forthcoming season and thinks one of their signings could have a rather large impact if settling in.
Although Mills may be most well-known for spells with the likes of Charlton Athletic, Middlesbrough and Leeds United, it was with Norwich where it all started for the defender. A product of the Canaries’ academy, the right-back really broke onto the scene at Norwich in the 1996/97 season where he was everpresent in their defence.
After leaving the East Anglian side in 1998 to join Charlton, his career would really begin to flourish. He’d end up gaining promotion to the top flight with the Addicks, playing in the Champions League for Leeds and even winning the EFL Cup with Middlesbrough. Add in his 19 caps for England and it is fair to say Mills had quite the career.
His former side Norwich are undergoing quite a transformation this summer, much of that down to the sacking of David Wagner and the following appointment of Johannes Hoff Thorup. Having made the play-offs last season, the Canaries will be hoping that this season they can secure promotion back to the Premier League.
There is plenty to like about the club’s current direction and they have made somewhat of a notable signing so far this window, that being Panamanian international Jose Cordoba who is fresh off of the back of representing his country at the Copa America.
Speaking exclusively to The Real EFL on behalf of 888 Poker, Mills emphasised the importance of good recruitment as well as the impact that Cordoba could have at the club.
“I’ve not see a lot of him to be fair, but recruitment is huge at every level and for Norwich with an aim of pushing for the play-offs, recruiting players to set them off on the right track next season is very important.
“Settling into new surroundings can be difficult, some do it easily, some takes time, so I hope Cordoba can fit in well and having a good pre-season can help too. Data now on players from all over the world is at an all time high and should the work have been done well here, can naturally give Norwich a chance to have a player on their hands who can light up the Championship.
“They need to bring more goals into the squad as with so many games, to have players who can score goals helps massively as defensively, a team like Norwich can battle well to hold onto a lead.”
The signing of Cordoba from Levski Sofia is certainly an exciting one and he could become integral to the defence at Carrow Road in years to come. With a big addition in their defensive ranks, Hoff Thorup may now turn his attention to the forward areas which could well unlock further improvement ahead of the forthcoming season.
It wouldn’t come as any sort of surprise to see Cordoba in the staring eleven come the first game of the season, especially after the departure of Ben Gibson. Although unproven in the EFL there’s plenty to like about the centre-half and at 23, he has an incredibly high ceiling.
It’s fair to say here at The Real EFL we’re rather large fans of the signing of the Panamanian international, find out three of our writer’s views in the video below:
