In a bid to return to the top flight of English football, Sheffield United are keen on an ambitious swoop for Swansea City’s Matt Grimes and Norwich City star Kenny McLean, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The Yorkshire-based side was relegated from the Premier League in the 2023/24 season with the most goals conceded ever and just 16 points. After a disappointing season, the club will look to improve their ranks with a new set of midfielders.
Already during the transfer window, the club have seen over 10 players depart including midfield options such as Oliver Norwood and Ben Osborn. Therefore, depth will need to be increased to keep up with the relentless league.
Furthermore, defensive midfielder Vinicius Souza is reportedly a target for Fulham. As a result, this could leave the Blades with even fewer options for the upcoming season.
One of the two players the Blades are interested in is Matt Grimes. The midfielder has played just under 300 games in the Championship for clubs such as Leeds, Blackburn Rovers and current club Swansea. As such, his experience in the league would be crucial to Chris Wilder’s side.

In addition, Kenny McLean is their second target. The Scottish international also has vast experience in the league with over 130 appearances throughout his time at Carrow Road. Along with his experience for the Canaries, the 32-year-old also starred for Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.
As a result of the issues they face, their Championship rivals stars are top targets. As reported by Alan Nixon, Grimes is on their hit list and would be a major addition if the deal can be finalised.
However, the Swans would want a decent fee for their captain and most influential player. Similarly, McLean is a key part of Norwich’s style with his ability to play out from deep. Therefore, he could also attract a major fee.

This would be a great deal for Sheffield United and a necessary way to show their intent and ambition under their potential new owners. With the Championship in 2024/25 potentially being very competitive, a well-rounded and experienced squad will be critical.
Despite this, it will be tough for these deals to be finalised. Due to both of their targets first team commitments, a move away could be unlikely. Furthermore, both players are settled at their clubs with over six years spent respectively. As a result, these deals will be make or break for the Blades season.
