Sheffield United Face Competition For Key Transfer Target

Preston North End have made a late swoop to steal Peterborough United star Harrison Burrows from under the noses of Sheffield United, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 22-year-old is set to leave the Weston Homes Stadium this summer after starring for Darren Ferguson’s side in recent years. A move to Bramall Lane has long been on the cards, with a fee in excess of £2 million having already been agreed. However, despite reports that personal terms have been struck and a medical has been passed, the transfer is yet to be announced.

Burrows would represent pure profit for Posh, having emerged through their academy. He captained the side during the second half of last season, where he also scored a stunning double to secure a 2-1 win over Wycombe Wanderers in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley Stadium in April.

Peterborough’s failure to secure promotion from League One meant it was always going to be a struggle to keep hold of the versatile youngster. They fell at the play-off semi-final stage for the second year running, this time bowing out to eventual winners Oxford United.

Sheffield United are keen to add players to their squad who they feel will be able to cement their place in the Championship, whilst also pushing for a return to the Premier League. Burrows is seen as someone who will be capable of plying his trade in the top tier in years to come, but the Blades’ takeover woes have halted any immediate transfer plans.

As such, Preston are now looking to take advantage of the situation. It is claimed that the Lilywhites have made a bid for the defender as the look to hijack the move at the 11th hour.

The Lancashire-based outfit finished 10th in the Championship last season, 10 points off the play-off places. They are hoping that they can upset the applecart next season by slipping into the top six. However, they are yet to make any signings so far this summer and have also had to cope with the loss of club captain Alan Browne.

Writer’s View

It’s unsurprising to see clubs attempt to take advantage of Sheffield United’s woes. Burrows is highly rated by a number of clubs and Preston are unlikely to be the only ones watching the situation unfold. Making a late move could bring others to the fray, but much depends on the player himself.

Having already agreed terms with the Blades, he may be hoping to secure a switch to a team that could threaten the top end of the Championship. Of course, they do have to contend with a points deduction next season, but they have just come down from the Premier League and will be expected to make up the shortfall. However, Preston have been a team that have consistently threatened to break into the play-offs over the past decade or so, and they will feel that a handful of quality additions could see them finally get over the line. You can’t blame them for trying their luck.
