Former Feyenoord Midfielder Wanted By Ambitious League Two Side

MK Dons are in advanced talks to sign current Crawley Town promotion winner Liam Kelly, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke on X

The midfielder, who began his career at Reading, impressed during his time with the Royals enough to earn himself a move to European giants Feyenoord in the summer of 2019. Although he struggled to break into their first team on too many occasions, Kelly still registered a handful of senior appearances for the Dutch outfit.

Crawley chose to pick the 28-year-old up last year after a two-year stint with Rochdale, which ended in relegation out of the football league. Transfers like that were common for Scott Lindsey’s side last summer, as the club’s hierarchy chose to focus on players from markets that their rivals were typically not focusing on, such as those from overseas or non-league.

That transfer policy may have seemed risky at the time, but ultimately the decision was vindicated when their strategy saw the team earn an unlikely promotion through the League Two play-offs. However, a large contingent of that squad are no longer with the club, with six of their eleven play-off starters having already moved on.

Now, their play-off semi-final opponents MK Dons are hoping to secure the signature of the man at the heart of that midfield last season to increase that number to seven.

Mike Williamson has not been afraid to make early moves this transfer window. If this deal were to go ahead, Kelly would become the Buckinghamshire outfit’s seventh signing, with still over a month to go before their season opener at Stadium MK against Bradford City.

With the likes of Sam Sherring and Tommy Leigh already joining, ambition is clearly present at the club, as the former-Gateshead manager hopes his team can go one step further this campaign.

This is a transfer that will be viewed completely differently by both sets of fans. On the one hand, Crawley supporters must now be increasingly worried at the speed at which their team is being torn apart.

For MK however, this would be a fantastic deal. Although a fee would be needed, due to Kelly still having a year left on his contract at The Broadfield Stadium, the Dons have not been averse to paying for their targets this window. Therefore, this is one they should be trying hard to get over the line.
