Forgotten Wrexham Man Joins Seventh Tier Side

Former Wrexham and Harrogate Town defender Jake Lawlor has joined Northern Premier League side Guiseley for the 2024/25 season according to the club’s official website.

He’s a familiar face at Nethermoor having played for the club between 2013 and 2018 and despite potentially not hitting the heights that he may have wanted, will bring plenty of experience to the seventh tier side’s dressing room.

After leaving Guiseley to join Wrexham in 2018, Lawlor would take his form up a notch, becoming a mainstay in the Red Dragons’ defence for two seasons between 2018 and 2020. He’d end up making 65 National League appearances for the Welsh outfit and his impressive performances would earn him a move to the EFL.

Joining up with Harrogate Town for the 2020/21 season, Lawlor would make 17 appearances in League Two for the Sulphurites but struggled to hold down a regular starting spot. A failed move to Hartlepool the season after would somewhat halt his progression and he’d end up spending the last three seasons with National League North side Darlington.

At 33-years-of-age, Lawlor could now potentially be considered past his best and he’s not quite as promising as he was during his time with Wrexham. Nonetheless, for the level, he brings a whole background of experience to draw upon.

After re-signing with the Lions, the defender spoke to club media, and seemed delighted to be back.

“It is the main aim of all of us to gain promotion and that looks very achievable with the players who have been recruited. I know quite a few of the lads and the club have certainly not disappointed with who they have recruited.”

“I am looking forward to playing with some very good players and I am really looking forward to the pre-season games when you can pit yourself against some full-time players. It is all about getting games under your belt at this stage and gaining match fitness.”

“We want to be doing well as a team for the club and its fans and get the team back to where it belongs. This club needs to be at a high level and I am now returning with experience of those higher levels in the National League and EFL and hope to use that experience to benefit the club.”

Given all that has happened with both the takeover as well as consecutive promotions at Wrexham, many fans may have forgotten about Lawlor. There has been plenty of change since he played for the Welsh outfit but during his spell with the club he’d prove himself as quite the asset.

He bring experience to the Guiseley dressing room, something that is needed with the club looking to return to the National League North. Next term will be their third in the Northern Premier League and fans will be hoping that the addition of Lawlor will be that they need to progress into the sixth tier.
