Wrexham Target Promotion Winning Goalkeeper

Co-owner Rob McElhenney has confirmed Wrexham are in talks to bring goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo back to the club, as per a report from talkSPORT.

The report claims the club are ‘actively’ talking to the 22-year-old in a bid to persuade him to return to the Welsh club. Okonkwo spent a hugely successful season on loan at the STōK Cae Ras, keeping 14 clean sheets and helping the club gain promotion to League One.

Now, the Arsenal academy graduate finds himself in need of a club after the expiration of his deal at the Emirates and The Red Dragons are keen to get a deal done.

After such an impressive season that saw the giant Londoner rank among the best-performing keepers in League Two in terms of clean sheets, save percentage and goals prevented, it is unsurprising that McElhenney and the Wrexham hierarchy are keen to secure his signature.

Interest in the young keeper will likely be high, particularly after impressing last season and with the experience he has behind him already. Being available on a free transfer will surely appeal to clubs in search of a goalkeeper, who could see Okonkwo as the ideal choice for the present and as a sellable asset in the future.

The Wrexham chief confirmed recently via TalkSport, when asked about the chances of Okonkwo returning, that, “There’s a very good chance,” before giving a highly promising statement for fans saying, “We know he wants to come back to Wrexham and we definitely want him.”

Wrexham would hope to be at the front of any queue for the 22-year-old having had him at the club for such a successful campaign and will be able to match other interested clubs financially.

For Okonkwo, a move back to Wales will appeal having enjoyed the previous season and he will have the opportunity to test himself at a higher level. The Red Dragons should still be able to compete in the transfer market with most of League One and it could be an opportunity for him to once again play in a successful side.
